From Opportunity to Independence: Tao and Lek’s Bicycle Mechanic Journeys

30 Nov 1999
Sometimes, a single opportunity can change the course of a life. For Tao and Lek, joining the bicycle mechanic internship with Hands Experience Thailand was exactly that, a chance to learn, grow, and build a future they can be proud of.

Tao: Turning Passion into a Career

Tao, from Yasothon province, previously worked at a restaurant after earning a vocational diploma in Electrical Power. While his job was steady, his passion for mechanics never faded.

During the internship, Tao learned everything from basic bike maintenance to advanced repairs. He also trained across Bangkok, Hua Hin, and Khao Lak, gaining experience with different work styles and international customers. One of the highlights of his journey was participating in Ride to Provide 2026, where he used his skills to help cyclists safely reach their destinations.

“When I learned I was selected, I was thrilled. This program wasn’t just training, it was a doorway to a career I love,” he shared.

Today, Tao is confident, disciplined, and determined to become a professional bicycle mechanic, and one day open his own shop.

“Thank you for this life-changing opportunity,” he said. “I will do my absolute best.”

Lek: Confidence Through Hands-On Learning

Lek, originally from Surin, joined Home Hug at four years old. The internship gave him the chance to repair high-end bicycles and learn skills he never imagined. He trained in Bangkok, Hua Hin, and Khao Lak, where he also explored hospitality skills like coffee brewing and cooking.

Ride To Provide 2026 gave him a chance to practice teamwork, responsibility, and care while maintaining bikes for cyclists, experiences he treasures.

Lek dreams of living a peaceful, stable life and passing his knowledge on to others. “Thank you to Hands Across the Water for giving me these opportunities,” he shared. “Keep fighting and stay strong, Home Hug kids!”

“I used to be very quiet, but now I speak up with confidence,” Lek said.

Building Futures, One Bike at a Time

Tao’s and Lek’s journeys show that vocational training goes beyond fixing bicycles, it builds confidence, independence, and purpose. As they enter the final weeks of their internship with Hands Experience Thailand, both continue working closely with the HET team.

At the end of February, Hands will meet with Tao to discuss a potential full-time role at HET, while Lek will continue his internship training alongside his school studies as he builds toward his future.
