Volunteer Opportunities

At Hands, we are almost always in need of an extra pair of hands!

The charity sector in particular is an incredibly crowded place with a seemingly infinite choice for those looking to contribute to the good that is being done. And it’s for this reason that we so deeply appreciate those who put up their hand to support us at Hands.

We have a number of ways in which you can volunteer with Hands.

Events

We run a number of events across the year in Australia and we are always looking for some extra hands to help. If you are super organised, love getting your hands dirty in any event situation, and have a go get em attitude then get in touch and we are sure to have the perfect job for you at our next event.

English Language Program

Volunteer opportunities exist for English language teachers to support the work of Hands Across The Water, in the Hands English Program. The Program is delivered through a prescribed curriculum and learning materials are provided. A program coordinator maintains contact throughout the placement via online meetings, and face-to-face when possible.

As consistency and predictability are important for effective learning when delivering education to children, teaching terms for 2019 are for a minimum of 6-9 months beginning with a group training early May in Thailand. Qualified pre-school, primary or secondary teachers are required and ESL/EFL experience &/or qualifications are preferred.

Volunteers are required to obtain the ‘Working With Children Check’ (WWCC) and Police checks relevant to their State or Territory, as well as agree to and comply with the Hands Child Protection Policy.

Download additional information and submit your application here.

Hands Designs

We have a wonderful range of fashion and merchandise that is for sale through our social enterprise. You can support us by hosting a party in your home and showcasing our fantastic range. All proceeds support the operation of the charity and provide employment for 9 women in the local community in Thailand. Everything is handmade with love and with reasonable pricing this makes for a really great get together with friends and loved ones.

Volunteer in one of our homes

Occasionally there are opportunities to volunteer your support at Hands’ homes. This could include meal preparation, cleaning, reading and other useful tasks. As we are guided by the best interest of the children, volunteers to our orphanages are required to stay for a minimum of three weeks and obtain the Working with Children Check (except WA) and Police Check relevant to their state or territory.  You will need to cover your own expenses such as flights, food and accommodation.

We recommend volunteers are 21 years old or older. Exceptions will be made on a case by case basis and certainly if you are under that age and have a travelling companion, that would be preferred.

To enquire about volunteering, please complete this form and we will send you some additional questions which will assist us with understanding your interests, skills and availability. Please note that submitting an application does not guarantee you a volunteer role. Each application is rigorously assessed on its value to our Thai homes and our children.

Our volunteer needs vary greatly over time and if there is no suitable opportunity available we will keep you informed and retain your details on file and be in contact should a suitable opportunity arise.

Info

Hands Across the Water is an Australian charity founded in 2005 by Peter Baines OAM. Hands is dedicated to enriching the lives of disadvantaged children and communities in Thailand. 100% of all donations go directly to the kids and communities.
