From Supporters to Family: Peter & Pui’s Story

When Peter and Pui first began sponsoring a child through Hands Across the Water, they thought they were simply supporting one young person’s education. But in reality, it was the beginning of a much deeper connection.

“We had both felt drawn to support children in Thailand,” shares Peter. “Panapha was born and raised in the northeast of Thailand, and we were looking into ways we could give back. That’s when we were introduced to Peter Baines and started learning about the incredible work Hands was doing. It was a no-brainer to begin sponsoring a child.”

That first step sparked a ripple effect of involvement. Since that initial introduction, Peter and Pui have immersed themselves in the Hands community — riding in charity events, bringing their whole family to the Bangkok Run to Remember, meeting their sponsor child multiple times, and using their professional skills to support Hands in both Thailand and Australia.

Their sponsor child, 14-year-old Korpai, is currently studying via homeschool. She loves cats, dreams of becoming a musician, and describes her sponsor as “a kind person who helps make my life better.”

In her own words, Korpai says:

“When I receive a message or letter from my sponsor, I feel a warmth inside — as if I have another family member far away.”

Peter and Pui feel that too.

“She’s been through a lot,” says Peter, “but she is blossoming. The more we meet and connect with the kids, the more we realise the absolute miracle that Hands has created. These aren’t just kids with potential — they’re young people full of joy, love, and strength.”

A favourite memory for Peter is saying goodbye to Korpai after one of the rides.

“She gave me a huge hug as we left Yasothon, and it just stayed with me. That sense of trust and affection is incredibly moving.”

As their involvement continues to grow, one quote from Pete Baines continues to inspire them both: “Whatever the conditions are, they are my favourite.”

A beautiful reminder to embrace what we cannot control — and to lean into the moments of connection, just like this one.

This Christmas, we celebrate the bonds between sponsor and child — and the lifelong impact it brings to both. If you’d like to see for yourself how rewarding this type of sponsorship can be, for just $110 a month, we can help make that happen.
