The Gift of Connection: A Sponsor Story

Our journey with Hands began unexpectedly after hearing Peter Baines speak at a conference we were organising. His words, “You can’t help everyone, but you can help someone,” landed hard. It was the spark we needed. At the time, we were focused on our careers and living what felt like a fairly self-contained life. We wanted to do something that mattered.

That “something” became everything. Beau joined his first ride soon after (now at 9 and counting), and I (Emma) found my place by leading partner trips to the homes, volunteering and connecting with the children. It was on my first solo trip to BTN that my heart was cracked wide open. I was nervous, unsure what to expect but the moment I arrived, the kids welcomed me like family. Nine days of play, cuddles and laughter later, I left in tears, not realising this would become a lifelong connection.

Since then, our whole family has become entwined in the Hands story. Our daughter Coco has grown up knowing the kids, forming real friendships that have expanded her view of the world. She’s even given school speeches about Hands. We’ve celebrated Christmases at the homes, organised fundraisers, and watched young kids blossom into confident young adults.

Early on, we sponsored a cheeky little boy named Tiger. His spark and resilience lit up every moment we spent together. When Tiger moved on, we began sponsoring Snow who, funnily enough, shares many traits with our daughter: a love of dance, music and performance, and a big, warm heart.
What Hands has given us can’t be measured. Purpose, perspective, joy. We now carry a second home in our hearts. We’ve shared meals, stories, hugs and milestones. We give what we can, but always leave with more than we came for.

From Snow’s Perspective

My sponsors, Emma and Beau, mean the world to me. They’ve always supported me—giving me the chance to go to school, eat delicious food, and grow with friends by my side. Every time I receive a letter from them, I feel so happy. It’s like having another family member far away who really cares.

Because of their support, I’ve had the confidence to learn, to perform, and to dream big. One day, I hope to become a traditional Thai dancer and make them proud.

This Christmas, we celebrate the bonds between sponsor and child — and the lifelong impact it brings to both. If you’d like to see for yourself how rewarding this type of sponsorship can be, for just $110 a month we can help make that happen.
