As Covid-19 continues to wreak havoc on our plans to travel to Thailand, the team at Hands Across the Water have been cooking up some amazing experiences in Australia and New Zealand to localise our famous shared experiences.

In April 2022, we will head to Lake Tekapo to take on the Alps to Ocean ride. This bucket list ride clocks up 300km of cycling on trail and quiet country roads, taking in the most incredible scenery that New Zealand has to offer. Alps to Ocean is the longest continuous ride in New Zealand and a must do for anyone travelling to the South Island which is why we have chosen to partner with Active Adventures to bring this beautiful ride to our community.

Fees and Fundraising


5 Nights Twin Share Accommodation

3rd April – 8th of April 2022 inclusive

Hotels will be modest in their offering and often in remote areas. WiFi can be a little hit and miss in some areas.



Specialized Roll- Elite or equivalent. These are excellent lightweight, cross-terrain touring bikes with great flexibility.



All meals are covered in your registration. Our team on the ground takes care of breakfast, lunch and dinner on the rides and provides plenty of sustenance throughout the day at the water stops. Your welcome drinks and final celebration dinner are also included.


Cycling Kit

Your registration includes a customised cycling jersey, shorts and gloves. You will have the opportunity to order additional kit if you choose. You will receive a sizing chart in coming months to help you order the right size kit for the tour.



All transfers between the ride and Christchurch, hotels and Mt Cook National Park and included


Support crew and bike mechanics

We only work with the best and you will get to meet some of the nicest people and support crew that you will have ever met. Nothing is too much trouble as long as you bring your manners. Our bike mechanics keep everything running tip top during your tour.


Individual Fundraising

During the registration process, you will be prompted to set up your fundraising page. You can update this page with your story and share your unique link to start raising funds. The team at Hands are here to support you with ideas so don’t be afraid to ask for help.



You will receive a training program that will help prep you for your 300km journey. The key to your training will be time in the saddle as opposed to km’s ridden so even if the weather turns poor, you can get to the local gym or spin class to clock up your hours on the bike. We also have a great series of videos if you are new to cycling or looking for some additional training tips.

What is the Cost ?

In addition to the tour costs you will need to arrange flights to and from Christchurch. To register you can either pay in full or choose the 3 month payment plan.

To participate, it is a requirement to raise AUD$5,000

Cancellation Policy:

Cancellation greater than 3 months out from the ride: $500 + any costs already paid 

Cancellation 3 months out: 50% of total registration fee 

Cancellation 2 months out: 75% of total registration fee

Cancellation 1 month out: 100% of total registration fee

Is Fundraising Compulsory ?

Yes. By fundraising a minimum of $5,000 for your ride experience, you provide 350 children in our care with access to basic necessities, healthcare and education. Importantly, you are providing them with a life of choice.

What happens if the event is cancelled due to coronavirus?

In the event of the ride being cancelled due to COVID-19, a full refund will be issued or the credit can be transferred to a future ride.

If the event is postponed due to COVID-19 any funds paid will be transferred to the new date or a different Hands experience. 

In the event that a participant chooses not to particpiate in the ride experience that is still going ahead due to coronavirus concerns will be treated as a 'change of mind' therefore cancellation. The non refundable $500 deposit will be forfeited and any balance funds will be carried over to a future ride or Hands Experience. 

What is the best way to start my fundraising?

Getting started can be a bit daunting at first; we always say the first $1,000 is the hardest and then it gets easier. Below are our top 3 tips to get your fundraising dial off zero: 

  1. Your online fundraising page is the most simple and effective way to kick start your fundraising. Update your page with your profile image, a story about why you are fundraising and share directly from your page to kick start those dollars coming in. 
  2. Make a personal donation to your fundraising page. This can help set the tone for your supporters and show your commitment to your experience.
