The Goods Press Corner The So Extreme Run – 800km in 8 Days It began as a way to beat the mid-life suburbia blues but now Sydneysider and long time supporter Greg Wallace has turned his hobby into a legacy, changing lives with every step he takes. On January 15, Greg will join our cyclists and embark on an epic 800km run in eight days through Thailand in order to raise funds for the children of Hands. His run is part of our 10th annual Hands Across the Water Bike Ride – although he’ll be tackling it on foot! Greg’s journey with us began in 2011, when he completed his first 800km bike ride from Bangkok to Khao Lak. “The ride provided such a wonderful and emotional experience,” he said. “Sometimes it’s all about the journey.” After that life-changing experience he thought with the right preparation, it could be possible to run the 800km. So now it’s time to walk the talk – or rather run it. The 50 year old running veteran has combined the last ten years of experience to meet the epic challenge, which equates to 19 back-to-back marathons. Starting before sunrise each morning, the South Ride Route will take him along Thailand’s East Coast for the first six days before branching westward to the West Coast, travelling through Khao Sok National Park. The final day includes the largest and toughest part of the challenge, which is a 4.4km hill climb followed by a 7km descent. After that there is a nice flat run towards our original home in Baan Tharn Namchai that now houses and cares for more than 100 children. “The children run out to greet us on the last day and that is what makes it all worth it in the end,” he said. “We get to see exactly what we have been working so hard towards.” Greg has been training solidly for the run, which has not been without its setbacks, including some last minute retractions for logistics support. Now, more than ever, he needs your support to reach his fundraising goal of $30,000, with 100% donations going directly towards the children in need across Thailand. We wish Greg and all the riders the best of luck!!
