I almost spilled my Latte the other day when I opened an email with a bold opening statement that read “less than 100 days until Christmas”. Sounds cliché but where has this year gone?

As I write this article, it is September and we’re already starting to see glimpses of Christmas in shop windows, trickling into our inbox, and built into project deadlines. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not going all Grinch here. In fact, I love Christmas. It is one of my favourite times of the year. Nothing fills my cup more than giving to those around me. Whether I am cooking a meal for my family, carefully selecting the right gift for loved ones, or jumping on a bicycle in Thailand to ride for our kids, the giving season fills me with joy and boy does it feel good.

As the giving season approaches, we’ll start to see retailers ramp up their activity in preparation for some of the biggest spending days of the year. We’ll see Black Friday take the world by storm on 29th November as retailers drop their pricing for this global shopping phenomenon.

Here at Hands we are working on a giving campaign of the different kind. This campaign is about giving to those less fortunate. It’s about giving to those who don’t have the luxury of all that we have in our own lives. It’s about giving the kids at Hands a life of choice. So this Christmas we’ll be joining the worldwide movement Giving Tuesday to shine a light on some bigger issues and divert some of that spending into charitable donations.

Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving fuelled by the power of social media. The day is celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving and the widely recognised shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Giving Tuesday kicks off the charitable season by encouraging people to focus on their holiday and end of year giving.

Our goal is to build stronger communities and create a ripple effect that will broaden our message and impact. We’re calling on our community to help us spread our message far and wide to raise 10% of our annual operating costs ($1.7m per annum) in one day. Whether it is a simple share, a small donation, or taking action and getting involved on a larger scale, we know that together we can all achieve more this Christmas. 6 ways to get involved with Giving Tuesday

  1. A simple Share goes a long way. The success of giving Tuesday comes down to the conversation that is generated on social media – last year there were over 14.2 billion social media impressions around #givingtuesday. Help us spread the word of Hands by sharing social media posts and getting involved on the day. If your message resonates with just 1 person that feels compelled to make a one-off donation, then we are one step closer to our goal. Now imagine that on a larger scale and we’d be well on the way to reaching our $170,000 goal.
  2. Volunteer with us. Join the Hands Team as we set aside the day to raise funds by jumping on the phones at our Giving Tuesday Hub. With a goal of $170,000 we know that the more people we have on the phones, sharing our messaging and managing our socials the better the outcome will be. If you love getting on the phone and you want to join our team then get in touch. The Giving Tuesday Hub will be held in Sydney but if you were keen to rally some people together to replicate this event in another state then we’d love for you to get involved.
  3. Host an Event. We know that many hands make light work and what better way to spread the word of Hands Across the Water than by hosting an event on Tuesday 3 rd December. You might want to host a bake off in your office and sell the delicious treats to raise money, invite your clients to a golf day, or host a trivia night with your friends/family. We’re putting together some fantastic event packs that will give you tips, tricks and collateral to support your event. Did you know you can sell tickets to your event through our website. Just click here to submit your event.
  4. Donate. There are many ways you can help drive the donations we receive on the day. Consider donating $5 and tagging 5 friends to challenge them to match your donation. Encourage your network to do the same by tagging 5 of their friends and we might just be able to go viral at the cost of $5 to you! That’s the cost of your morning coffee. You might also consider making a personal contribution outside of your normal giving routine or introduce Hands to someone new who might feel compelled to donate. There are many ways to contribute to the financial goal without going broke.
  5. Corporate Matching. Speak to your organisation about matching your donations on Giving Tuesday. You might already be part of a payroll giving scheme so why not ask your organisation to double any donations made on that day. Alternatively, host an event and invite them to match whatever is raised on the day. We are currently working on securing a corporate partner to match what is received on our website on the day. Imagine, if your $500 donation was matched by your workplace to $1000 and then once it comes into Hands, we match that again to $2000. Now we’re talking ripple effects.

So I invite you to come along on this journey and help us spread the messaging of Giving Tuesday far and wide. Let’s leverage this amazing community of humans and see if we can raise 10% of our annual operating costs to cover food, shelter, and education for our kids and ultimately the pathway to a better future.

C’mon Hands friends and family, let’s be part of this incredible movement, let’s make this big!

Get in touch and let us know how you want to get involved.
